September Task List
September is almost here! As a transitional month, September is an ideal time to get ready for fall and winter. While the weather is still warm and these tasks are not on the minds of many yet, here are a few things you should look to get done in this upcoming month.
Plant Flower Bulbs
If you are devoted to your flower garden, September is the perfect time to begin planting your bulbs for spring. Once the weather has cooled down and before the ground freezes over is the ideal time to plant your bulbs. If it is too warm, your bulbs will sprout prematurely, and if the ground freezes before the bulb’s roots have set, they will perish. So, check the weather forecast to plan the perfect week to do this task.
Make Door and Window Upgrades
If you have windows or doors that need attention this year, September is a great time to replace them. While the weather is still mild, your home will not be nearly as uncomfortable during the transition and your new windows or door will provide increased comfort for the cold weather that lies ahead. Not to mention that new windows and doors have higher energy efficiency ratings which will translate to lower utility bills.
Service Your Furnace
The next item on your September checklist should be to service your furnace in preparation for colder weather. Change the filter, check the pilot light, and vacuum dust. If it seems that there is a problem with your furnace, be sure to call an HVAC technician out. It's far better to realize your furnace has a problem now as opposed to when you actually need it.
Inspect Your Roof
Rain, hail, snow, and ice can all wreak havoc on your roof. To make sure that your roof can stand up to such abuse from the weather, inspect it thoroughly now. Look for loose or missing shingles and inspect your gutters as well. And while you are up there, don’t forget to clean out your gutters so that ice dams are not able to form.
