Ways to Increase Home Security

By Tailored by Woodhill - 1-28-2022

At Tailored by Woodhill, we will build your home on any lot you desire. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully you choose a property, it will not exempt you from people who may want to take advantage of you. Once your home is designed and built, here are some things you can do to protect your home from break ins and burglaries.

Arm Your Home with Lights

Burglars do not want to be caught and it is much easier to be stealthy in the dark. Take away that line of defense by installing motion activated lights around the perimeter of your home. This way, if someone is lurking about your home, they will trigger the lights and this will spook them and alert you as well.

Mind Your Trash

Without realizing it, you could make a burglar’s job easier with what you leave by your trash cans. If you just recently bought a big-ticket item like a tv or computer, make sure to properly break down the box it came in and place the box in your garbage can. This way you can avoid catching the attention of thieves.

Keep Car Keys Nearby

A good habit to fall into is keeping your car keys by your bedside table. This can come in handy if you are woken up by what sounds like an intruder in your garage. You can hit the car alarm and hopefully startle the burglar into leaving. If that does not deter them, it should get the attention of your neighbors who can come to your aid.

Install Smart Devices

Today, there are a great many smart devices available that you can use to defend your home. Of course, installing security cameras around your property is always wise, but you can also install a Ring doorbell. Cameras like these can be paired with your phones and computers and will alert you to when they are activated and record when people approach your home. In addition, you can take advantage of smart locks and keypads. When you make this switch, you will not have to rely on stowing a spare key around your property for guests or neighbors to access in an emergency, something that burglars search for. Instead, you can provide important people with a security code that will give them entry.

Maintain Your Property

Burglars look for opportunities to strike when people are not home. So, make it clear that you are home regularly. Do not let mail pile up. Keep your landscaping manicured. And park a car in plain sight, if possible. Close your blinds at night, however, so that leering eyes cannot peer in.

Ultimately, we cannot prevent bad things from happening in the world, but we can do our best to prepare for them.
