Should I Remodel My Existing Home or Build a New Home?

By Tailored by Woodhill - 2-27-2023

You know it’s time for a change, but you don’t know if you should renovate your existing home or build a new custom home. Before you begin on either path, you should weigh both options to see what is the best fit for you and your family.

Remodeling

If you love the location of your existing home, remodeling might be the best fit for you. Being able to stay in the same neighborhood with familiar amenities and resources can sometimes outweigh the advantages of building a new home.

When it comes to budget, renovations may cost less up front. However, keep in mind, many times there are unforeseen construction costs after a renovation has started, especially if it is an older home which could have hidden issues such as rotted wood, faulty electrical systems or asbestos. You may also have the added expense of bringing the home up to code.

Remodeling an existing home means you’ll be living in an active construction site. Be prepared for lots of noise. If you have little ones this might not be the best option as it can interfere with their daily routines and nap schedules.

Building New

Building a new home means you’re able to tailor it to your specific needs. You aren’t limited to the existing floor plan or load bearing walls. Building a home from the ground up gives you the most control and allows you to choose every last detail from the layout to the finishes. You have the ability to truly make your home your own. And don’t forget the land. With on your land home building, you can design a home that takes advantage of the best views.

Technology has expanded greatly in the last decade and a new home can accommodate new technologies and smart features. An older home that was built before advancements in technologies are more difficult and more expensive to adequately adapt to the new world. New builds can also save you on utility bills because homes today are built with energy-efficient materials compared to their earlier counterparts.

When building, everything in the home is new and when you build with Tailored by Woodhill Homes, you receive our One-Year Limited Warranty*. A new home brings peace of mind knowing maintenance and repairs are minimal.
